It is the Year of Our Lord 1522, thirteen years into the reign of His Majesty, King Henry VIII. Although his wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon, has borne him now six children, only one of them has survived beyond the first few months of life - and the Princess Mary is not the heir that Henry desires. The King grows steadily more impatient with his inability to produce an heir, the Queen grows increasingly more desperate for the Lord to give her a son, and the people of England watch the King spending money hand over fist while they are mired in dissatisfaction and disease. The decadence of the Church has lead to the spread of Lutheranism, though it is still considered grave heresy to decry Rome, but they say that these "reformers" meet in secret and praise the notion that any man, not just a man educated by the Church, can read The Bible. As if there needed to be more fuel added to this fire, the King has now laid eyes on Anne Boleyn, the sister of his current mistress, and rumor has it that he's quite taken with the young Lady Anne. ...
